34 Maj Gyanbahadur Dhenga enlisted into the Brigade of Gurkhas in February 1993 in Pokhara, Nepal. Upon completing his basic training in Hong Kong, he joined 2nd King Edward VII Own Gurkha Rifles (The Sirmoor Rifles) in November 1993 (later 1 RGR). After his Junior Leadership Cadre, he completed ‘P’ Coy and jump course in 1998 and joined the Recce Platoon in 1 RGR. As an SNCO, he had taken numerous appointments, including instructor at Close Observation Training and Advisor Team (COTAT) - First Gurkha Instructor in this environment. He also took the CQMS appointment and Instructor at Jungle Warfare School in Brunei. On promotion to WO2, he was posted to 1 Mercian Regt as the CSM G (TOBRUK) Coy and deployed on Op HERRICK 12. Maj Gyan was commissioned in July 2011 and took on roles as Platoon Commander and Company 2ICs (C Mogaung Company in 1 RGR and Gurkha Company Catterick, respectively). During his tenure as the Second-In-Command of Gurkha Company Catterick, Maj Gyan made a significant impact by implementing a cashless policy. This initiative aimed to safeguard vulnerable recruits and staff while ensuring that the quality and quantity of service remained uncompromised. On promotion to the rank of Major, he assumed command of the Headquarters Company at the Infantry Training Centre, Catterick (Support Battalion) inApril 2017. Thismarkedahistoricmilestone as he became the “First Gurkha” Officer Commanding (OC) in a British Battalion. After serving 1.5 years as OC HQ Coy, under his leadership and initiative the Training Support (BABAJI) Company was established on 19 September 2018 and the OC’s (OF3) PiD was successfully converted from the UKTAP to GURTAP in July 2021. Having done over four years of Sub-Unit command (back- to-back) appointment, he took the challenges to serve in an extraordinary role as the SO2 staff officer within a diverse multi- national and Tri-Service Headquarters – a significant distinction as the “First Gurkha Officer” operating within such a tri-service setting. With this accomplished background, and esteemed role of Gurkha Major within the British Gurkhas Nepal, he is set to assume the role of Officer Commanding Gurkha Company at the Infantry Training Centre, Catterick. Major Gyan’s operational experiences include service in OP AGRICOLA -KOSOVO (1999), OP SILKMAN – Sierra Leone (2001), Bosnia (2003/2005, in a Static Covert Surveillance role) and OP HERRICK 12 &17. Maj Gyan is married to Anju, and they have two daughters (Angel and Alisha). Angel has completed her masters with Distinction in ABA (Applied Behaviour Analysis) from the Bangor University, and Alisha is studying civil engineering at West London University.
