This Day in History: 1814/12/17

In a letter dated 30 Nov 1814 Mr Adam , Secretary to the Govt.of India wrote to Colonel Fagan, Adjutant General India, requesting Lieutenant Frederick Young to assume command of ‘a strong body of Irregulars (hillmen) of about 1500’ to assist General Gillespie in an advance into the Himalayas. According to a letter from Lord Moira dated 1 Jun 1815 to the Honourable East India Coy, this instruction was later qualified to ‘only Goorkhas and hillmen’.
