In the First Anglo-Sikh War the Sirmoor Battalion fought at the battle of Aliwal, about 50km north-east of Lahore, driving the Sikhs back across the River Sutlej. The staff of the King’s Colour was cut in half by a cannon ball and replaced by bamboo. Click here for a description of the battle and a picture of the medal awarded for it.
