This Day in History: 1856-12-18
Lieutenant Colonel Evans, Commandant of the Sirmoor Battalion, wrote to H Keene Esq, Superintendent Dehra Dun, with a petition dated 12 December 1856 from all ranks of the Battalion, requesting a gift of ‘the old lines of the Bodyguard (which is in cantonments) as now we are children of the Great Hon’ble Company etc’. Their main concern was that their families should have a permanent home when they were deployed on operations. This was their first request for a permanent home. It later developed into the the ‘Charter’ by which the original three Goorkha Regiments got permanent homes at Almorah, Dehra and Dharamsala.
