This Day in History: 1856/12/18
Lieutenant Colonel Evans, Commandant Sirmoor Battalion, wrote to H Keene Esq Superintendent Dehra Dun in support of a petition dated 12 December 1856 from All Ranks requesting a gift of ‘the old lines of the Bodyguard (which is in cantonments) as now we are children of the Great Hon’ble Company etc’. The main concern of the Regiment was that their families should have a permanent home when they were deployed on operations. This marked the beginning of the Sirmoor Rifles’ request for a permanent location or home which later on developed into the the ‘Charter’ by which the original 3 Goorkha Regiments got permanent homes at Almorah, Dehra and Dharmsala.
