This Day in History: 1864-03-18

The Secretary to the Government of India wrote to the Quartermaster General: ‘The Governor-General in Council sanctions the retention of the lines at Dehra by the families of the 2nd Goorkha Regiment during the absence of the Corps [and] considers it very desirable looking to the different circumstances in which recruits from Nepal entering our service find themselves as compared with other races.  The families will be able to remain in quiet occupation of the lines, as hereto, until the Regiment returns.’
