This Day in History: 1879-10-24

The 2nd Goorkhas had left Dehra Dun on 3 October 1879 following the assassination of Sir Louis Cavagnari, the British envoy, and his escort in Kabul. On the 24th October they joined the 2nd Division commanded by General Bright at Surkhab Bridge near Jugdulluck prior to the invasion of Afghanistan and the capture of Kabul in December. These were opening moves of the second phase of the 2nd Afghan War.  Click here to read an account of the campaign.
