This Day in History: 1879/12/21
The 2nd Goorkhas left their winter camp at Gandamak which they had shared with the 9th (Norfolk) Regiment of Foot, the 4th Goorkhas and the Corps of Guides, all under command of General Gough, to march to Kabul ‘under very considerable climatic difficulties – with heavy snowfall, slippery roads which gave the transport much trouble, and kept the rearguards out often till nightfall.’
