This Day in History: 1890-04-21

The main body of the 2nd Battalion arrived back at Dehra Dun from the Chin-Looshai Expedition, two weeks after the return of Major Begbie with the 3 companies which had been seconded to Colonel Skinner’s Column.  The operation was intended to suppress raiding by the Shendu tribe across the border from the area east of the Chittagong Hill Tracts.  Activities were mainly the establishment of forts, road-building and jungle-clearing.  According to the Regimental History this was ‘dull, arduous work [and] none of the tribes attempted any opposition’.  Although the main body returned on this day, a detachment of 2nd Goorkhas was left to garrison Fort Tregear until May 1891.
