This Day in History: 1897-08-28
On the North-West Frontier the 1st Battalion received orders at 0600hrs to march the 27kms to Matanni (towards Kohat) to join a force sent to suppress a general insurrection among the Waziri, Mohmand, Swat, Afridi and Orakzaie tribes, who were unhappy with the new frontier recently demarcated by the Durand Line. It was not reached until 2000hrs because the extreme heat required frequent halts. At Matanni the 1st Battalion was joined by 6th Bengal Cavalry and 30th Punjab Infantry.
