This Day in History: 1897-11-14

A strong reconnaissance patrol was sent into the Waran Valley (on the North-West Frontier) where small groups of Afridi tribesmen were observed to be leaving their homes and were permitted to walk just ahead of the leading Goorkhas. There had not been any contacts when without warning the patrol was suddenly fired upon by a group of Afridi tribesmen who killed a Goorkha Rifleman and wounded another.
