This Day in History: 1915-02-04

In positions south-west of Neuve Chappelle, the 2nd Battalion occupied trenches that in places were 3 feet deep in water and the companies were mostly billeted in those houses still standing along the street. The Regimental History recounts: ‘The stream between picquets and breastwork would have proved a considerable difficulty in an advance, but early on the 4th [February] we received from the Sappers a number of bridges ready made up which were soon placed in position behind each picquet, and at nightfall we were relieved by the 2nd Battalion of the 3rd Goorkhas’.
