824 ranks of the 1st Battalion (under the Officiating Commandant Major B R Nicholl pending the arrival of Lieutenant Colonel E H Sweet) arrived in Basra on the SS Thongwa having left Karachi five days previously. They joined 37th Indian Brigade (Brigadier General F J Fowler) in preparation for deployment up the Tigris and operations against the Turks deployed around the key Garrison town of Kut.
