This Day In History: 1917-02-01

The 1st Battalion entered the offensive against Turkish positions in and around the Liquorice factory, an area to the west of Kut on the right bank of the Tigris. There followed two days of heavy fighting resulting in a new front line. Battalion casualties were substantial: from an initial force of 545 all ranks three British officers, two Gurkha officers and 82 Other Ranks were killed; two British Officers, five Gurkha Officers and 197 Other Ranks were wounded.
