This Day in History: 1918-08-26
The 1st Battalion marched from Kermanshah to Hamadan via the steep Kangavar Pass, where they had to pull the ambulances up by ropes. A detachment of the 1st Battalion already at Hamadan rejoined them. The town was crowded with Nestorian Assyrians, refugees escaping from the Turkish Army at Lake Urmia. The Regimental Historian commented: ‘They were not Asiatic in appearance, being a remarkably fair people, and it was a curious sight seeing a whole tribe of some 40,000 in flight with horses, bullocks, carts and all their belongings’.
