This Day in History: 1919-08-20

The 1st Battalion War Diary reported from Persia: ‘At this time duties were abnormally heavy, nights out of bed being one in one….continuous night work, particularly that of escorting convoys, put a severe strain on the men. The sick rate, however, was comparatively low, and this is attributed to the fact that ‘Hours of Silence’ were observed daily from 1300 to 1600 hrs when every man off-duty was compelled to lie down and rest.’
