This Day in History: 1920-05-31
Captain Francis Tuker, who had just rejoined the 1st Battalion at Rustamabad in North West Persia after being wounded, recalled ‘When the Column Commander came to visit I made our Quarterguard turn out with backs as close to the wall as possible so that he should not see the holes on the seats of their serge trousers. He walked along their fronts and murmured something about ‘very smart’ and the guard resolutely refused to dismiss till he’d turned the corner’.
