This Day in History: 1927-01-24
The 2nd Battalion, en route to Datta Khel on the North-West Frontier, diverted the flow of a stream. They caught very large numbers of fish, sufficient to feed all men of the Battalion with most welcome fresh rations. Nearly ten years later the First Battalion did the same when working with the Tochi Scouts. The Regimental History remarked of that occasion: ‘It seems doubtful if the irregulars, who lost several maunds of fish (one maund is approximately equal to 37 kilogrammes) as a result of their generous permission, realised that Goorkha ‘fishing’ constituted an organised Battalion operation’.
