This Day in History: 1942-07-27
Heavy rains fell at Bharon Camp, Saugur, in Madhya Pradesh, where the 3rd Battalion as part of 77th Infantry Brigade under Brigadier Orde Wingate was located. They were undergoing a comprehensive training scheme to prepare all ranks to form small, tough, self-reliant columns in preparation for Operation Longcloth, the first Chindit expedition. The 3rd Battalion’s camp was isolated by floods which forced them to shift all moveable stores off the ground into the trees. It began as a lark, but ceased to be amusing when the entire camp was inundated. For three days, officers and men roosted among the branches.
