This Day in History: 1943-04-28
As the 3rd Battalion withdrew across the Irrawaddy at the end of the first Chindit expedition, the Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel L A Alexander, was helped across by Lieutenant Victor St George de la Rue. Shortly after crossing Alexander was seriously wounded by enemy fire and de la Rue and Flight Lieutenant Edmunds RAF helped him to shelter. De la Rue was killed shortly afterwards and is buried in Taukkyan War Cemetery, Myanmar. Based on testimony from Edmunds after the fall of Rangoon in April 1945, Alexander is assumed to have died as his body was not recovered.
