This Day in History: 1944-09-09
The Japanese authorities in Singapore refused to publish a news bulletin for prisoners of war held in Changi Camp, which included several imprisoned British Officers from the 2nd Battalion. However, on this day they were able to enjoy a concert. To celebrate Allied successes in Europe a pianist played ‘Somewhere in France’, ‘The Last Time I Saw Paris’, ‘Hang Out the Washing on the Siegfied Line’ and ‘By the Side of the Zuyder Zee’, but the audience was asked not to sing the words in order not to annoy their guards and risk punishment.
