This Day in History: 1950/12/12

Serious riots erupted in Singapore after a young Eurasian girl had married a Malay Muslim but had then been placed in the care of her parents. As the majority of troops were deployed in the jungle the 2nd Battalion assembled an ad hoc force under the Second-in-Command, Major Phillips, which carried out internal security duties, using tear gas and opening fire on the rioters on several occasions until peace was restored.
