This Day in History: 1963-09-28
Corporal Tejbahadur Gurung of the 1st Battalion was commanding a small detachment of three Goorkhas and a handful of Border Scouts at the village of Long Jawi in Borneo. They were attacked by a force of 100 Indonesian regular soldiers and volunteers armed with mortars and machine guns. For nearly three hours they held out but eventually, with one of his own men wounded and a wounded policeman to look after as well, he decided to withdraw. They had lost radio communications but eventually, after four days moving through the jungle and after borrowing a longboat, they arrived at the Company base in Belaga. Tejbahadur was awarded the Military Medal for his leadership and bravery.
