This Day in History: 1963-09-28

Corporal Tejbahadur Gurung of the 1st Battalion was commanding a small detachment of 3 Goorkhas and a handful of Border Scouts at the village of Long Jawi in Borneo.  They were attacked by a force of 100 Indonesian regular soldiers and volunteers armed with mortars and machine guns. For nearly 3 hours they held out but eventually, with one of his own men wounded and a wounded policeman to look after as well, he decided to withdraw. They had lost radio communications but eventually, after 4 days moving through the jungle and after borrowing a longboat, they arrived at the Company base in Belaga. Tejbahadur was awarded the Military Medal for his leadership and bravery.
