This Day in History: 1964-09-05
A Company of the 1st Battalion successfully destroyed an enemy camp at Nantakor in the Pensiangan/Saliliran area across the border in Kalimantan. After being lifted in by helicopter, they marched to the camp and had a long firefight with the Indonesians occupying it, incurring 4 casualties but inflicting severe damage on the enemy. Unusually, a helicopter was authorised to cross the border to pick up the wounded. The Company Commander, Major Willoughby, was awarded the Military Cross and two NCOs were awarded the Military Medal. Click here to read an account of the campaign.
