D Company of the 1st Battalion, on a night live-firing training exercise in Australia, had their silent advance to contact shattered by a prolonged burst of machine-gun fire. A young Gurkha Rifleman had come face-to-face with an emu, an animal beyond his experience and therefore assumed to be hostile. The emu did not survive.
