This Day in History: 1814-11-30
In a letter dated 30 November 1814 Mr Adam, Secretary to the Government of India, wrote to Colonel Fagan, Adjutant General India, requesting Lieutenant Frederick Young to assume command of ‘a strong body of Irregulars of about 1500’ to assist General Gillespie in an advance into the Himalayas. According to a letter from Lord Moira dated 1 June 1815 to the Honourable East India Company, they were to be ‘only Goorkhas and hill men’.
