This Day in History: 1857-05-20
In response to the Indian Mutiny the 2nd Goorkhas continued to advance towards Meerut down the Ganges Canal aboard a fleet of 45 boats and barges, but encountered difficulties whenever they approached the numerous locks, at which crowds of armed Indians manned the bridges. At Bhola, where the locks had been completely destroyed, the Battalion came under fire but the enemy quickly dispersed after a few volleys had been fired at them. Bhola village was burnt and the prisoners tried by drum head court martial. 13 were found guilty and shot.
