This Day in History: 1891-04-27
Colonel Rennick’s Column, which included the 1st Battalion, reached Imphal, the capital of the State of Manipur. It had been recently abandoned by the Manipuris who had thrown away their arms, including an inscribed rifle presented to the Maharaja of Manipur by the Viceroy of India in 1872. They had also burned down the Palace and Arsenal. The Battalion remained in Manipur until after the execution of the rebel ringleaders when ‘the chief point of interest being that of the excellent shooting and fishing‘, they departed for India at the end of September.
