This Day in History: 1891-07-13
Lieutenant Colonel LW Shakespear served with the Regiment from 1886 to 1917, commanded the 2nd Battalion from 1906-1911, and was the author of the first and second volumes of the Regimental History. He reminisced: ‘In 1891 there were a great number of thefts in the barracks. The thief was caught and court-martialled, found guilty and sentenced to be flogged by the Bugle Major in front of the Battalion and dismissed by the Regiment. This was probably the last occasion such a punishment was carried out in the Regiment.’
