This Day in History: 1897-08-13

The 1st Battalion, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Eaton Travers, received orders to proceed to Peshawar to join the Reserve Column of the Tirah Expeditionary Force. As many 1st Battalion soldiers were on leave in Nepal 2 Gurkha Officers, 10 NCOs and 98 Riflemen were drafted from the 2nd Battalion to make up their strength to 736 All Ranks.  Click here to read an account of the campaign.  The medal to the right of this text was awarded to those who served in it (almost all of whom had already been awarded the ‘Punjab Frontier 1897-98’ clasp, as in this example).
