This Day in History: 1897-10-10

The 1st Battalion arrived at Shinaori to join the Tirah Field Force on the North-West Frontier (now in Pakistan) consisting of 34,000 men under the overall command of Lieutenant General Sir William Lockhart. The 1st Battalion was in 3rd Brigade, commanded by Brigadier General Kempster, alongside the Gordon Highlanders, Dorsetshire Regiment and 15th Sikhs.  Click here to read an account of the campaign.

This view was sketched by Melton Prior at Shinaori Fort.  The Dargai Heights can be seen in the centre of the picture, in the distance, the site of a major battle later in the campaign in which the 1st Battalion took part.
