This Day in History: 1897-11-24
Following the action at Dargai, the Column began to march back to Bagh but the going was so difficult that 1st Battalion did not start until 1400hrs and the enemy harassed them throughout the march. It was not until dusk that the tired Goorkhas reached camp only to discover that ‘their good friends the Gordon Highlanders…had pitched their tents for them and also carried out the 1st Battalion’s duties that night enabling the Goorkhas to get a proper rest’. As the diarist put it: ‘These were no small acts of friendship, seeing the thermometer registered 18 degrees of frost!’
