This Day in History: 1904-02-04

Gentleman Cadet Edward Ross (later Brigadier E J Ross OBE MC ADC who commanded the 1st Battalion 1929-33) represented Scotland in an international rugby match against Wales played at Swansea.  Ross had been forbidden to play for Scotland as the Royal Military College Sandhurst wanted him to play in a match against RMA Woolwich.  He feigned sick, and played for Scotland instead.  Even though Scotland lost 3-21, the press reported favourably on Ross’s performance so his ruse was discovered.  He was rusticated from Sandhurst for one term as a punishment.
