The 2nd Battalion, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Norie, received orders to mobilise for deployment as part of the Dehra Dun Brigade alongside the 1st Battalion Seaforth Highlanders, 6th Jat Light Infantry, and 1st Battalion 9th Gurkha Rifles. At this stage it was not known whether they were to relieve other troops in Egypt or reinforce the Home Expeditionary Force in France. In the event they went to France. The Battalion was reinforced by 76 officers and men from the 1st Battalion. Mobilisation was complete by 17th August and orders were received to entrain for Bombay on 1st September.
