This Day in History: 1915-03-13

The 2nd Battalion, in billets at Vielle Chapelle in France, received a draft of 50 reinforcements from the Burma and Assam Military Police Battalions. Another draft of 95 men from these units arrived on 21st March. According to the Regimental history they were ‘all Goorkhas of good physique and a most useful addition to the Battalion, but they necessarily required a lot of training…..to put them on a level with Regulars’. The first draft included a 2nd Goorkhas officer, Captain George Mathew, who had been on seconded duty with them. He was killed in action on 10th May 1915.
