This Day in History: 1915-07-04

The 2nd Battalion moved into the Front Line to relieve the 4th Seaforth Highlanders in the ‘ Kinkroo ‘ section of the front line, near La Quinque Rue and about 300m from the German lines , but the Battalion was still subject to enemy shelling and one Gurkha was killed moving along a communication trench.

Map of the trench system referred to (from the Regimental History).  Someone there obviously had a sweet tooth: trenches are named ‘Cadbury’s’ and ‘Fry’s’ and there is a ‘Chocolate post’ as well as a ‘Chocolate Menier crossroads’
