This Day in History: 1918-01-18
The 2nd Battalion, having deployed from Dehra Dun to Tank for operations on the North West Frontier, was ordered to despatch “200 Rifles” under the command of Major Cruickshank to the extreme north east of India where a serious rebellion had broken out among the Kuki tribes on the border with Assam and Burma. Their task was to provide garrison duties and support for the Assam rifles. The journey across India took five days and the detachment was deployed in both Kohima and Imphal. In the event they were not required and returned to the Battalion “after a pleasant sojourn of four months”.
