This Day in History: 1935-05-07

During the Delhi manoeuvres the Viceroy of India’s wife, Lady Willingdon, chose to visit the 1st Battalion lines “to see how the dear soldiers live under canvas”. She was received by the Quartemaster and came to a tent that was closed up. She asked to see inside and the flaps were thrown open to reveal a stark naked Gurkha soldier changing after night guard. Unfazed, she said “Oh, sorry, I should have knocked first”.
