This Day in History: 1942-02-07
In Singapore, where the 2nd Battalion had withdrawn, the main roads in the north of the island came under continuous enemy harassing fire from the mainland. Behind Johore Baru, on the far side of the Causeway, the Japanese raised a large observation balloon enabling them to see all the defences, but they did not set foot on the island until late the following day.
The Causeway from Johore Baru to Singapore Island. Its demolition (see gap in the centre of the photograph) delayed the Japanese advance on to the island until 8th February 1942.
