The Third Battalion was ordered to report immediately to 77th Indian Brigade. The Regimental History reported: ‘On arrival at Patheria [in Uttar Pradesh] the officers met their new commander – a man of slouching bearing with a rock-hewn Old Testament face, a biting and stimulating tongue and a restless temperament which revealed dynamic intentions. His name was Orde Wingate’.
