This Day in History: 1942-11-19
C Company of the 5th Battalion was tasked to surround a village outside Dehra Dun whose inhabitants had tried to wreck a railway line as part of the Congress Party ‘Quit India‘ campaign. After a successful conclusion to the operation the Officer Commanding the Company, Major Michael Underhill, ‘drove the Company HQ bus back to the Lines – the accelerator pedal was a 6 inch nail, point upwards, and when approaching a bend the chassis turned the corner while the body disconcertingly appeared to go straight on.’
