This Day in History: 1943-04-10

Number One Column of the 1st Chindit Expedition, based on A Company of the 3rd Battalion, had crossed the River Shweli on 9th April. On the 10th at Mangla, about 10km south of the river, they captured three Japanese spies in civilian dress. They spoke English and Hindustani but interrogation could get no information out of them. Subedar [Captain] Siblal Thapa is reported in the Regimental History as saying: ‘By this time we were pretty sick of Japs. A naik [corporal] and a few riflemen took them for a walk. They came back without the Japs and settled down to clean their kukris’.
