This Day in History: 1944-06-08

In Italy, the 1st Battalion was ordered to Tollo on the River Arielli. Although the enemy had withdrawn the Battalion took casualties from mines. They continued their advance in pursuit of the withdrawing enemy, having contacts with the German rearguard and meeting ‘surging crowds of enraptured Italians amid salvoes of acclamation, cascades of flowers, kisses and embraces’.
