This Day in History: 1944-06-25

A party from the 1st Battalion visited Cassino. They recovered and buried the bodies of Captain I Nicholl, Lieutenant R Loftus-Tottenham and twenty-two Gurkhas. The visit provided sorrowful confirmation of the magnificent achievement of the Battalion in the opening attack in February: ‘these dauntless men had battled on to die against the third and last line of German defences’.
