This Day in History: 1944-08-10
In billets in Castiglion, in Italy, British Officers provided 60 brace of pheasant for the Mess during their stay, with the enthusiastic help of local gamekeepers. They salved their consciences about shooting them 2 months before the start of the season by identifying them as Fascist pheasants, and therefore an enemy which needed to be killed.
