This Day in History: 1947-08-08

A signal was received announcing that on the partition and independence of India the 2nd Goorkhas (less the 4th Battalion), the 6th Gurkha Rifles (less their 3rd Battalion), the 7th Gurkha Rifles and the 10th Gurkha Rifles had been selected for service in the British Army. The remaining six Regiments were to remain in the Indian Army, where they are to this day.  A seventh regiment was raised after independence and the Indian Army currently has 39 battalions of Gurkhas.
