This Day in History: 1948-09-19
The Minister for Defence The Right Honourable John Strachey and the Commander-in-Chief Far East Land Forces General Sir John Harding visited the 1st Battalion in Slim Barracks. Because of an administrative error they arrived one hour early. The only British Officer in Battalion HQ was Major Monty Ormsby, whose orderly had taken away his starched uniform for a final press before this important visit. Ormsby therefore greeted the Secretary of State and Commander-in-Chief wearing only his underpants.
