This Day in History: 1948-10-05
In Malaya, a lorry transporting 20 men of C Company, 2nd Battalion, was ambushed by a large force of Communist Terrorists (CT) on the Lintang Road. 10 Gurkhas were killed and nine wounded. Most of the men were newly-joined recruits. In a follow-up operation the Battalion evicted some 500 squatters from an area known to house the HQ of the 5th Regiment of the MRLA (Malayan Races Liberation Army). A further 5000-6000 moved voluntarily. This separated the CTs from their supply base and drove them into the jungle. Click here to read a full account of the campaign.
