This Day in History: 1965-09-16

C Company of the 1st Battalion, commanded by Major JL Chapple, based at Ba Kelalan in Borneo, fired on an C-130 of the Indonesian Air Force intending to drop parachutists.  It flew away but later returned and was shot down by anti-aircraft fire from its own side, crashing at Long Bawan.  25 years later Chapple, by then Chief of the General Staff, encountered an Indonesian General who explained that the crash led to a planned deployment of more parachutists being abandoned.  They were therefore in Jakarta during an attempted coup on 1st October and able to forestall it.  Click here for a more detailed account.
