This Day in History: 1980-08-04

The Colonel in Chief, His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, visited the 1st Battalion while they were training in Norfolk. Afterwards he presented the Battalion with a live goat, knowing Gurkhas very much enjoy preparing and barbecueing meat on the hoof. For the return to barracks the goat was tethered in the back of a Landrover carrying one of the Battalion’s British Officers. The vehicle was stopped by the Police, who asked where they had got the goat from. The Officer said “The Prince of Wales gave it to me”. History does not relate how the Police replied.
